What Is a Conception Date & How Is It Estimated?

The conception date is the exact biological day on which a sperm successfully penetrates and fertilizes a mature ovum inside the fallopian tube. Unlike the Last Menstrual Period (which is an external calendar event), conception is an internal cellular process that typically occurs within 12 to 24 hours of ovulation.

Intercourse Date vs. Fertilization Date

A common misconception is that conception must occur on the exact date of intercourse. In human reproductive biology:

  • Sperm Longevity: Sperm can survive in fertile cervical mucus for up to 5 days awaiting ovulation.
  • Egg Longevity: An unfertilized ovum remains viable for only 12 to 24 hours after release.
  • Result: Intercourse occurring 3, 4, or 5 days before ovulation can still result in conception on the day of ovulation.
